So far so good! I hear that South Texas isnt a good area for artichokes as too hot and humid. I planted outdoors from seed in raised irrigated bed on Sept 5th 2021. Most seeds came up easily. In Feb we got a 5 day hard freeze and before it hit I dug up the plants and placed in pots in garage over the freeze. Replanted after a week or so, 1 in full sun bed, 1 in partial sun bed, and they are doing well so far and growing. Hardy hardy plants so far which other gardeners at my community garden envy. Fingers crossed! I can see why some grow these as ornamentals, beautiful plants! Not sure how long it will take for these to fruit. hopefully they continue to be happy and grow.
I know I sent a photo of these to Daniel. They are just beautiful little chokes. Pick them small, and eat them whole! I grow 3 or 4 kinds of artichokes and love them all. But this is the one I wait for each spring. This bush gets huge in the second and third year. Mine is still producing and it's 4 years old. These are very sharp when you pick them, so use gloves. Once you eat these, you'll want to plant a field of them.
I plant these in baskets, as gophers love them too, but I'm not sharing.
